How to get rid of a cold sore is easy when you know these well-proven strategies. Do not be sidelined socially ever again. You can finally take control of these cold sore events.
To discover how to get rid of your cold sore, you should know a little about what you are dealing with.
Herpes simplex virus causes cold sores by destroying millions of surface cells in its process of creating new copies of itself. These exploded cells merge to create one large ulcer.
Stress will cause changes in your body that create these favorable conditions. These changes include hormonal changes, acid/alkaline shift, increase usage of B and C vitamins, and distracting your immune system sentries that guard the cold sore virus.
The body can and will get rid of a cold sore without any help from us. But who wants to suffer for 3 to 4 weeks, when we do not need to?
Here are a few proven tips to get rid of a cold sore in much less time than you may be used to.
1. COOLING DOWN A HOT VIRUS. The cold sore virus likes it warm (and will actually create heat) to replicate. Cooling the area down will slow down this process. Ice is the best. You may be lucky and even send the virus back into hibernation with this little trick.
2. TAKE SOME LYSINE CAPSULES. Lysine and arginine are two protein fractions that have a powerful effect on cold sores. The virus likes arginine because it is a major ingredient in building new virus. The virus does not like lysine because it replaces the arginine in your cells so the virus cannot reproduce. Normal dosage to get rid of a current cold sore is 1000 to 4000 milligrams daily.
3. ELIMINATE THE HERPES VIRUS. Keep the cold sore clean and chase away tons of virus by applying hydrogen peroxide with a cotton ball or swab. It may sting and fizz. It will affect any virus it touches, and adds a healing dose of oxygen to the wound. Although alcohol will work, this is a better way to get rid of a cold sore.
4. DO NOT BE AN ACID LIP. The cold sore virus loves acid and hates alkaline. Avoid acid foods that may touch the cold sore - like vinegar products and tomatoes. Try to encourage your body toward the alkaline side by taking a good quality vitamin and mineral supplement. The minerals in particular, such as calcium, are critical for this.
Just a couple of final comments I would like to give you that may help you get rid of that cold sore a little faster.
There is not a person that would not benefit from a daily vitamin and mineral regimen. It will not only protect you from cold sores, but other diseases as well. The B and C vitamins help reduce the effects of stress, and the minerals help keep your body alkaline.
Also, a final word on the ice treatment. Ice works great if used prior to the actual ulcer. After the cold sore opens, then using warmth will get more healing blood to the area. This alone can shorten healing by 50%.
I hope this sampling of proven ways will help you today. There are many more highly effective ways to get rid of a cold sore, but these should get you started quickly.

Hello Denny
I got my first cold sore over this last weekend. I love your article and it has been very helpful in trying to get rid of it. Some friends told me about you and they were right - you really seem to care about helping.
At any rate, for the lysine, How long do I take it? How quick does it work? Are there foods I can eat too? Is it safe?
Thanks Denny for any help you can give and thanks for the great info in this article.

Hey Kimmy
So sorry that you have joined the cold sore club. Thank you so much for your kind words and the 5 stars.
You are very wise to take lysine. It is an excellent cold sore treatment.
Start taking it as soon as you feel a sore coming on. Keep taking it until the final red spot is gone.
Usually there is a warning such as a tingling or itching of the skin where the sore will form. This virus lives and moves to the surface along the nerve fibers. The end of the nerve will tingle when the virus is moving.
It will start working immediately. Depending how soon you start taking lysine, it can stop an actual outbreak. It will work even better if you reduce your intake of arginine during this time. Arginine is what feeds the cold sore virus. The main food items that you should temporarily avoid are grain products - oats and wheat in particular. These are very high in arginine. Nuts and seeds also. Lysine acts by getting between the virus and the arginine. Lysine will always work better if you aren't flooding your system with arginine at the same time.
Lysine is safe. It is a common amino acid found in nearly every food to some degree. Your body needs it every day. 4 grams daily is a common cold sore treatment plan. Most people use lysine supplements because you can measure exactly what you take for best results.
Thank you Kimmy. Have a great weekend and please stay in touch. Any more questions, please comment here.
